A Good Voice or a Good Marketer?
Years ago when I was working as a Radio Documentaries Producer for the BBC, I remember being at an ideas’ pitch meeting. One lovely young producer was in the middle of her pitch. It was quite frankly, brilliant. She used tools and gimmicks and any number of things to tell the BBC editors to commission her programme.
There was just one niggling thing.
I knew her to be a rubbish producer. A lovely woman but just not very good at the job.
I, on the other had was good at interviewing, presentation and production. I’d even won a Race in the Media Award.
I was and remain rubbish at marketing.
There is nothing I loathe more than having to sell myself. Selling you and your talents. No problem!
I work well at what I do which is bringing scripts to life. However that just doesn’t cut it in the modern world. to succeed in this modern world, one has to be almost better at telling people how good you are than you are at actually fulfilling the brief.
It’s a shame as I know there are hundreds of people out there who are utterly brilliant at what they do but nobody knows. Sadly many of those among them, may fall by the wayside as commissioners and casting directors simply do not have the time to seek them out.
It’s a shame really. But that is progress…. Isn’t it?
What do you think?
